The Coast Guard, The Church, Right, and Wrong

12068sm The Coast Guard, The Church, Right, and WrongNo, I’m not going to give theological answers to the title of this post… that’s not my style. This is a post having to do with an article found on WorldNetDaily and Life News about an officer who is refusing a Hepatitis A vaccination based on his Catholic religious beliefs as the vaccination is derived from the lungs of aborted children. Thanks to the public at large (i.e. FlynnPatrick at Fredsplace ) I found an interesting piece that could help ease this persons perspective- from the CatholicNews website:

Msgr. Suaudeau said that because the abortions occurred some 40 years ago, using vaccines associated with those cell lines “is a very, very remote” form of cooperation with evil, so remote that it “does not indicate any moral value” when compared to the greater good derived from preventing the spread of an infectious disease.

Msgr. Suaudeau said the paper urged people to lobby “and push government and health officials” to get alternative, effective vaccines on the U.S. market so Catholics would not be forced to “act against their conscience” if they are to safeguard their children’s health.

So with the original article pointing out that there is a “vaccine derived from animal sources is awaiting FDA approval,” life should be able to get back to normal and we’ll all be able to check the box on that controversy.

And as for my thought… overall they are irrelevant, but the officer in question does have a valid point, after all, it was a controversial subject like this that poised a reversal in the ruling that now allows the wearing of religious head covers.

What say you?
