Aside from being All Hallows Eve, the day our kids will no doubt load up on about 6 pounds of sugar, it’s also a day of history for the Coast Guard. It was today in 1991 that the book and the follow on movie, The Perfect Storm, is based on. From our great Coast Guard Historians site-
During an extremely severe winter storm, CGC Tamaroa rescued four of five Air National Guard crewmen from an H-60 that had ditched south of Long Island due to fuel exhaustion. The Tamaroa had been attempting to rescue three persons off the sailing vessel Satori (as had the ANG H-60) the previous day (see 30 October entry above) when she was diverted to assist the Air National Guard pararescuemen. The fifth pararescueman was never found. The Tamaroa was awarded the Coast Guard Unit Commendation for these rescue attempts and the events were chronicled in the best selling book and movie “The Perfect Storm.”
I bring you this information as both an actual knowledge gaining post but also as a distraction to the events of Thursday night with our CG-1705. My family and I are still hoping for the best, and praying for their families.
