Budget cutting Cutters and Units... what's your scuttlebutt? [update]

rumors 300x267 Budget cutting Cutters and Units... whats your scuttlebutt? [update]Now that many have had time to think about the potential for real budget cuts and the decommissioning of units, assets, and cutters the real questions begin. I’ve had more than my fair-share of emails and chats today with speculation and questions on the matters of what cutters and MSST’s are going away and though I’d like to say that ADM Allen, VADM Papp and I all sat down and talked about it- I can’t, we didn’t.

ADM Allen notes in his all hands email (link above) that on the chopping block are:

  • 5 Major Cutters;
  • 4 HU-25 Falcon Jets;
  • 5 HH-65 Dolphin Helicopters; and
  • 5 MSST Units

So with that let the speculation begin: What major cutters, MSST’s and Stations will be going away or loosing assets?

UPDATE! Well that wasn’t that fun- but at least someone, ‘er, @jklopson was nice enough to through me a bone via this ‘lil PDF. No need to read it if you’re looking for the answers… here they are:

  • 5 Major Cutters: USCGCs HAMILTON, CHASE, RUSH, JARVIS, and ACUSHNET
  • 4 HU-25 Falcon Jets: Miami/Cape Cod
  • 5 HH-65 Dolphin Helicopters: Unknown/Various
  • 5 MSST Units: MSSTs Anchorage, San Francisco, New Orleans, New York, and Kings Bay

But If you really want to see the entire paper- actually quite interesting- here it is-

    Don't forget the budge proposal included decommissioning the National Strike Force Coordination Center in Elizabeth City, NC - this unit coordinates the training, policy, and equipment maintenance for the CG Strike Teams as well as managing the Response Resource Inventory (RRI) which is mandated by law for the NSFCC to maintain a list of oil spill equipment owned by Oil Spill Response Organizations (OSROs). Many of the people that work there are also civilians whose jobs will be completely eliminated and who have worked with the CG and Strike Teams for over 30year - that knowledge will be lost. Very unfortunate.
  • I did take note that the Center was going but didn't think of it in terms of the CG loosing a knowledge base... put in those terms this could be a devastating move that could take years to recover from. I recall getting into aviation just after they merged the rates and with said merger a lot of knowlege went to the way side.

    Interesting point- thank you for bringing it up.

    The Unknown/Various are also included in the fact sheet.

    5 HH-65 Dolphin Helicopters: All from AirSta Traverse City.
    4 HU-25 Falcon Jets: 3 from AirSta Cape Cod, 1 from AirSta Cape Cod

    I think it's kind of ironic that two of the units being decommissioned are MSST San Francisco, which just returned from Haiti and the Hamilton is there now.
  • The answers as they stand now is in the one page summary that was linked to ADM Allen's all hands e-mail at http://www.uscg.mil/comdt/all_hands/message47.asp

    The fact sheet is here: http://www.uscg.mil/comdt/docs/FY11_Budget_Fact...

    The truth may be changed through the budget process, but some of the answers are in the fact sheet:

    o 5 cutters: HAMILTON, CHASE, RUSH, JARVIS, and ACUSHNET
    o Falcons: 3 from Miami, one from Cape Cod
    o Helos: Relocate four H-60s to CGAS Traverse City – two from Operation Bahamas, Turks, and Caicos (OPBAT) (CGAS Clearwater), two from Maritime Security Response Team (MSRT) (CGAS Elizabeth City); remove five HH-65s from service; close Air Facilities (AIRFAC) Muskegon, MI and Waukegan, IL.
    o MSSTs: MSSTs Anchorage, San Francisco, New Orleans, New York, and Kings Bay.

    There's also a lot of good info in the Posture Statement and Budget in Brief (also linked from the all hands mail). It puts names and faces on what we do and gives the broader context for the budget. You'll recognize the iconic picture on the second page.

    Make sure to read at least as far as Escanaba on page 19. That'll make some of your readers seasick just looking at it.
