A great video was published today showing some of our Coasties involved in last weeks accident involving the CG-6028 in Utah. In this video we see CAPT John Hardin, AIRSTA Elizabeth City’s CO, giving a welcome home to Cmdr. Patrick Shaw (I remember when he was an LT), Petty Officer 3rd Class Darren M. Hicks, and Petty Officer 3rd Class Edward Sychra. Along with CAPT Hardin is a plethora of friends and family that are also happy to see the three back. Our two remaining Coasties from the crash, Petty Officer 2nd Class Gina Panuzzi and Lt. Cmdr. Steven Cerveny Continue reading…

I was sent an email late yesterday afternoon stating, or rather asking, the following:
Ryan- In case you hadn’t seen or heard about it there was a crash of another [Coast Guard] aircraft. This is something I thought a prior aviator like yourself would have blogged about- did you know [there] was a cash?
It’s always nice to see that some are paying attention to what I am and am not writing on here. I did, in fact, know of the unfortunate incident moments after it happened (you are one of my Facebook fans aren’t you?). I was on watch on Wednesday Continue reading…

No, really, what is it?
As I sit here watching the Winter Olympics I find my mind drifting to a most peculiar place- or rather subject. I’ve began thinking about our shipmates and fellow servicemen who lost their lives in the mid-air collision on 29 October 2009. You’ll recall this collision involved one of our HC-130’s (CG-1705) with 7 shipmates and a Marine Corps helicopter with 2 people aboard. The search for the 9 missing service members was called off on 01 November 2009 and the mission when from search to recovery.
I’ve noted before that I was on watch the Continue reading…

Contests are fun aren’t they? Here’s my favorites thus far in the Coast Guard People’s Choice photo contest.
CARRIBEAN SEA – USCGC Vigorous (WMEC 627) prepares to enter a storm at sea while on routine patrol in the Caribbean Sea. The storm turned the picturesque day quickly into night, and, after a few minutes returned the day to its original pristine condition. (U.S. Coast Guard Photo by LTJG Christopher O’Meara)

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – An Air Station Clearwater, Fla., helicopter crew aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma assisted in the delivery of a male Haitian newborn on the cutter Saturday afternoon. A pregnant Haitian citizen went into labor on the flight deck as the helicopter was refueling aboard the cutter. The rescue swimmer from Coast Guard HH-60 helicopter CG6024 then delivered the five-pound newborn. The mother and child were taken to a Continue reading…

I happened upon this great five-some shot via aviationnews.eu depicting our legacy “H” model HC-130 Hercules, a new HC-144 Ocean Sentry, the aging HU-25 Falcon, and HH-60 Jayhawk, and the HH-65 Tupperwolf, ‘er, that is, the Dolphin. No big changes are en route with the site as of yet so I’ll just keep plugging away with the posts that I can. I hope you all have a great New Year and enjoy the time with your families before you start back to the grind of protecting our waters.
Five airframes that comprise the Coast Guard’s flying inventory were lined up Continue reading…

It’s that time of the year again- no not Christmas; thought that too is upon us. No I’m referring to the time of the year that people start listing the best (or worst) of the past year. Well the Coast Guard’s been nice enough to share the best, in their opinion, 11 Coast Guard videos of 2009. The press release for the video has all the details, but who needs those if you can just watch it ‘eh? So, here’s the video and beneath it is the 11 missions that were covered. Enjoy!
