This morning on Defense News the Coast Guard was noted as receiving praise from some Congressional members for the current status of the Deepwater project. You’ll recall that Deepwater is the Coast Guard’s major acquisitions program by which we’re getting new Cutters, small boats, and aircraft. In the past the senior leaders of the service were on the receiving end of some harsh criticism over the handling of the programs Continue reading…

Rep. Peter King (R-NY)
This week the Coast Guard shared with us its proposed budget request and its cutbacks for FY11 which made us sound like a very fiscally responsible organization as we were to request $75 million less then we did last year. Well, as expected, with the decommissioning of some of our MSST units it was only a matter of time before we saw some push back… which Continue reading…

Oh well- it happens. FORCECOM posted an update on their blog that the Coast Guard made a little mistake in noting the LT Thomas Shuler (as posted here) was the first USCG UAV pilot; however,
CDR Tony Saliceti is the first pilot to qualify in a UAS Predator B for the Coast Guard, accomplishing this feat in January 2008. He was hand selected to assist Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Continue reading…

There seems to be a new unaffiliated Coast Guard oriented magazine in town. Some of you may have already found it sitting around the office, but yesterday I found the periodical laying on my desk: U.S. Coast Guard Forum (direct link to digital copy). What an interesting climate to start a new publication- economically speaking of course.
I won’t tell you it’s a wiz-popping new magazine; however, they (KMI Publishing) Continue reading…

Often hailed as the “Tupper-Wolf,” or perhaps the plastic hanger queen in some situations, the Coast Guard’s HH-65 Dolphin airframe has become a staple of the Coast Guard image. And today in 1984 we, as the USCG, became the proud owners of the first accepted HH-65.
Today as we make our way through the oft touted Continue reading…

From iCommandant-
LT Thomas “Tank” Shuler [pictured] became the first operational Coast Guard UAS pilot as he landed his Predator-B aircraft in Sierra Vista, AZ. He completed his final qualification check flight on Wednesday, 21 October at the CBP Predator-B training facility. LT Shuler will return to Aviation training Center, Mobile to develop the Coast Guard’s UAS training and standardization program; he will also deploy routinely as part of the Coast Continue reading…
