Some of the most dedicated health nuts I’ve come across are fellow Coasties who’ve, for all intensive purposes, put me to shame in the “always on” physical fitness mode (i.e. cross fit). For some of the other fitness folks out there, the ones who enjoy running (’cause let’s face it, cross fitters are in a world of their own) I’ve found a great site for you.
Though admittedly I think I’ve posted this find once before for the life of me I can’t find it. So with that in mind I bring you a place to go as a Coastie Continue reading…

As the trend goes it seems as though all things become part of the social media scene whether we, or they (‘er, Tiger Woods) like it or not. Following said trend- and not necessarily in a bad way- a Mr. White (we’re not talking Reservoir Dogs here) created the Facebook group revolving around the Coast Guard MH-60T that crashed last weed in Utah on it’s return trip from Washington State. The group, The Support Group For Coast Guard 6028, is stating to gain some traction. I joined over this past weekend with only about 30 other “groupies” and as I Continue reading…

Do you ever wonder what it is I exactly talk about on here? Well you should because I sure has heck do… but that’s were the fun little tool of Wordle comes in handy. Head the the website, enter any web address- such as ryanerickson.com- and you’re presented with a cool little graphic depicting the topics of your site… the larger the word the more it shows up on your site. And apparently I talk a lot about the Coast Guard; hmm- who would’ve thought that?

Now this is an interesting way to not only start your weekend but a good way to prep your mind to start thinking of that grass/garden/dirt pile you call a yard. It’s also a reminder that Spring is almost here.
For those of you who’ve got a fetish for garden gnomes (you know who I’m talking about) and enjoy the Coast Guard as well- here comes a product of both worlds in an attempt to appease you all. This was sent to me a few days ago but I wanted to wait until today- Friday- to get Continue reading…

Yesterday the website gizmag ran a great post on the “I don’t think it’ll ever sell” Piranha unmanned surface vessel (USV) which is pictured here with a Coast Guard paintjob. Some of the specs included in the 54′ vsl are
Piranha USV weighs only 8,000 lb, yet can carry a 15,000 lb payload 2,500 miles, making it suitable for missions as diverse as anti-piracy, search and rescue, submarine hunting, and harbor patrol with a range of armament options that includes stabilized machine guns, Mark 54 torpedoes, and over-the-horizon missiles.
Though the missile option would be great for us as Continue reading…

My friend and fellow public affairs social media guru, PA1 Susan Blake, left me a message via Facebook (are you a FAN yet?) the other day giving me a heads up on the video that was over on CGVI. The video is titled Mission Profile, JTF Haiti Relief and was put together by PA2 Eric Chandler (check here for a version you CAN see on your workstation if the above one isn’t working).
In my amateur opinion I’ve got to hand it to PA2 for his work. The ten minute video is on par with those that we’ve seen Continue reading…

I’m actually posting this for a self point of reference in the case I may (I know I will) need it again but I guess it could be construed as a “how-to;” however, did you know you can change how often Google Notifier for Mac checks for new mail? I found this nice little bit of information on Mac OS X Hints and I keep having to go back to it every time I wipe my computer clean. The default 10 minute check just doesn’t do for me…
So, how do you change how often Notifier check Continue reading…
