Exclusive: Amidst a budget crisis USCG Sector Juneau is staying ahead in technology

Yesterday many of us watched VADM Papp speak to the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation answering their questions as they prepare to vote on 24 March 2010 on their recommendation of whether VADM Papp should be confirmed or not as out 24th Commandant (watch it here, starts at about minute 50:00). In his testimony to the Committee he spoke of the budget crunch that our service is Continue reading…

March 2010 Calendar by Sean Lawler

March 2010 Calendar by Sean Lawler

Well better late than never I guess… I thought I has the March 2010 calendar all ready to post before March even got here and, well, I didn’t. Anywho… here’s the March Coast Guard themed calendar from Sean Lawler. I asked Sean why he choose the theme of Douglas Munro for this month expecting him to pull out some obscure fact about Signalman First Continue reading…

If not part of the DoD, why is the Coast Guard called a Military Service?

Simply put: ease and simplicity.

One of the most common questions asked when someone finds out that the USCG isn’t part of DoD is: “If the Coast Guard isn’t part of the Department of Defense then why are we/they considered a branch of the military?”

It’s actually a great question and one I’ve been waiting to answer in light of some historical references. The month of March, as it pertains to Coast Continue reading…

What’s the latest on the investigation and recovery of Coast Guard C-130 CG-1705?

No, really, what is it?

As I sit here watching the Winter Olympics I find my mind drifting to a most peculiar place- or rather subject. I’ve began thinking about our shipmates and fellow servicemen who lost their lives in the mid-air collision on 29 October 2009. You’ll recall this collision involved one of our HC-130’s (CG-1705) with 7 shipmates and a Marine Corps helicopter with 2 people aboard. The search Continue reading…

Today we start the end of LORAN-C on a historical note

Today marks the beginning of the end for the long used LORAN-C signal/program under the USCG. It’s been long advertised that the Coast Guard has been was the process of terminating its LORAN-C signal thus eliminating LORAN Stations around the world. As a system that’s both outdated and hardly used (oh I can here the naysayers now…) this will surely save the U.S. taxpayer at least some cash. The Coast Continue reading…

Perhaps the single most iconic Coast Guard/Haiti picture thus far

There is no shortage of pictures coming out of Haiti right now; in fact, if you were to visit the Coast Guard flickr account (here) or the CGVI page (here) you’ll be presented with a deluge of photos coming out of there. The Coast Guard’s own service blog is also ripe with stories like this putting words behind said pictures for a better understanding of the local Continue reading…

A repetition of Coast Guard history... "Modernization" now, "Streamlining" then

I can’t say I’m a naysayer of our current Modernization/Deepwater movement; but living it everyday sure makes things move at a snail’s pace. None the less I thought I’d share a little piece of repeating history. Under our current Modernization efforts we’ve restructured our ways of doing business by way of consolidating units, long-term efficiency projects, and rate elimination/creation to name just a few. Well, as they say, history repeats Continue reading…
