If not part of the DoD, why is the Coast Guard called a Military Service?

Simply put: ease and simplicity.

One of the most common questions asked when someone finds out that the USCG isn’t part of DoD is: “If the Coast Guard isn’t part of the Department of Defense then why are we/they considered a branch of the military?”

It’s actually a great question and one I’ve been waiting to answer in light of some historical references. The month of March, as it pertains to Coast Continue reading…

DoD authorizes use of social media in the workplace... but what about the Coast Guard?

This past Thursday (25 February 2010) the Department of Defense, the parent command of the other four Armed Services, finally released its highly anticipated memorandum (DTM 09-026 also available below) covering the use of social media tools/websites on/from the unclassified computer networks (NIPRNET). Effective immediately the use of social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube is authorized with nearly no restrictions but only on DoD specific computers (read: Continue reading…

WOW! Truly the BEST video of Coast Guard Haiti operations thus far

My friend and fellow public affairs social media guru, PA1 Susan Blake, left me a message via Facebook (are you a FAN yet?) the other day giving me a heads up on the video that was over on CGVI. The video is titled Mission Profile, JTF Haiti Relief and was put together by PA2 Eric Chandler (check here for a version you CAN see on your workstation if the Continue reading…

Coast Guard Ban on Thumb-Drives to be lifted soon?

The last time we visited the issue of not being able to use thumb-drives on DoD (or Coast Guard) computers was back in October ‘09. You’ll also recall that it was noted then that the news out of U.S. Strategic Command (StratCom) was gleaming with hope as it was stated that the use of thumb-dives will once again be a reality, just not at that time. Well that time has Continue reading…

Senior leaders under new Commandant, VADM Papp, announced: Vice Commandant, PAC, LANT, and OPS

To date we’ve learned of who our next Commandant (VADM Papp) and our next Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard (BMCM Michael P. Leavitt) will be- but under those two positions it’s been fairly unclear who’s to fill the positions of our next foray of Senior Leadership posts- especially since our next Commandant will be my current boss here at Atlantic Area. The Vice Commandant was rumored to Continue reading…

Proposed 1.4% military pay raise in 2011... ouch

Yesterday’s online military publications were abuzz with the news that President Obama’s Administrations had published an economic point paper (let me know if you’ve seen it as I can’t find it) aimed at the reduction of spending and costs across the government but specifically the military. According to NavyTimes (and a plethora of others) Obama will

…seek a 1.4 percent military pay raise for 2011 as part of his defense budget Continue reading…

PA3 Blackwell is the epitome of who we are in the Coast Guard

PA3 Brandon Blackwell

There’s been no shortage of stories, from Coasties or otherwise, coming out of Haiti on the heroic and brave efforts our sailors, soldiers, doctors and rescue workers in general. This is a great time in our own service’s history as we’ll be able to look back on these digitally captured stories, pictures, and movies and remember what we did all with relative ease. Last week I was Continue reading…
