What is the United States Coast Guard?

What is the United States Coast Guard? Seemingly it’s a simple enough question if you had Google or some resemblance of a nautical history book- but the content of those sources doesn’t quite fit the question I’m asking (or rather stating). The question came about as I was listening to NPR the other day and a comment was being read aloud of which had the simple question of “what is the United States Army…?” The question was actually longer than that but I made my way into the Downtown Tunnel in Portsmouth and the remainder of the question was cut Continue reading…

Coasties on television… “Mayday! Bering Sea” and “The Oprah Show”

Schuyler (Oprah Show)

It a busy week for the folks at the U.S. Coast Guard Motion Picture & Television Office (yep, it’s a real office).

This is a yet another reminder (’cause I’ve been seeing them all week) to everyone that you can catch the airing of the new show Mayday! Bering Sea on the Discovery Channel tonight (03 March) at 9:00PM and 12:00AM (EST) or 6:00PM and 9:00PM (PST). The show is the about the sinking and saving crew from the Fishing Vessel Alaska Ranger on 23 March 2008. From the Discovery Channel listing you’ll note it’s the story of rescue-

On March Continue reading…

The State of the Coast Guard 2010; by the numbers

As I noted in the post prior to this I wasn’t able to watch the State of the Coast Guard address; however, I was able to read (just finished) the transcript from the address and found myself happy with what I read. I’ll admit there wasn’t anything in it I wasn’t expecting the Commandant to say; but I am impressed by his emphasis on the fact that our fleet is ageing and at a much faster pace than is sustainable. My favorite quote from his speech was “…we are federal first responder for the nation. And we are prepared to Continue reading…

Senior leaders under new Commandant, VADM Papp, announced: Vice Commandant, PAC, LANT, and OPS

To date we’ve learned of who our next Commandant (VADM Papp) and our next Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard (BMCM Michael P. Leavitt) will be- but under those two positions it’s been fairly unclear who’s to fill the positions of our next foray of Senior Leadership posts- especially since our next Commandant will be my current boss here at Atlantic Area. The Vice Commandant was rumored to be RADM Sally Brice-O’Hara but nothing hard on that had been released until today.

ADM Allen, the current Commandant, released an all hands email to the men and women of Continue reading…

Budget cutting Cutters and Units... what's your scuttlebutt? [update]

Now that many have had time to think about the potential for real budget cuts and the decommissioning of units, assets, and cutters the real questions begin. I’ve had more than my fair-share of emails and chats today with speculation and questions on the matters of what cutters and MSST’s are going away and though I’d like to say that ADM Allen, VADM Papp and I all sat down and talked about it- I can’t, we didn’t.

ADM Allen notes in his all hands email (link above) that on the chopping block are:

5 Major Cutters;
4 HU-25 Falcon Jets;
5 HH-65 Dolphin Continue reading…

The Coast Guard and the FY11 Budget; making us sound fiscal stewards

Not only frozen… but decreasing

UPDATE: The five MSST’s noted below are said to be Kings Bay, Boston, Anchorage, San Fran, and New Orleans.

Last night- actually tonight as I write this- I put out via the plethora of social networks a link to the PDF copy of the email our Commandant, Admiral Allen, sent out to the Coast Guard workforce outlining our way ahead with regards to sound fiscal responsibility. You can also read this as our future with less money- and what we’re doing about it. ADM Allen, quoting President Obama, makes note that “Families across the country Continue reading…

PA3 Blackwell is the epitome of who we are in the Coast Guard

PA3 Brandon Blackwell

There’s been no shortage of stories, from Coasties or otherwise, coming out of Haiti on the heroic and brave efforts our sailors, soldiers, doctors and rescue workers in general. This is a great time in our own service’s history as we’ll be able to look back on these digitally captured stories, pictures, and movies and remember what we did all with relative ease. Last week I was skimming the plethora of blogs, official and unofficial alike, and I came across a post on the District 9: Your Great Lakes Coast Guard blog. I looked at it briefly Continue reading…
