Recognizing the need for an award for Guardians assigned to headquarters and staff units during the recent emergent humanitarian operations in Haiti the Commandant of the Coast Guard, Admiral Thad Allen, today announced the approval of the Situational Briefing Badge, or SBB.
“People don’t realize that being a Senior Officer at a headquarters or staff unit can be just as stressful as going on patrols or combat overseas,” said CDR Russ Largo, a Coast Guard spokesman. “When you’re briefing that many Officers, your career can end in a heartbeat. And it can happen to Continue reading…

The last time we visited the issue of not being able to use thumb-drives on DoD (or Coast Guard) computers was back in October ‘09. You’ll also recall that it was noted then that the news out of U.S. Strategic Command (StratCom) was gleaming with hope as it was stated that the use of thumb-dives will once again be a reality, just not at that time. Well that time has come and gone and it looks like StratCom has given their blessing to once again use thumb-drives via USB.
According to a piece on Danger Room (via InsideDefense.com) the ban Continue reading…

To date we’ve learned of who our next Commandant (VADM Papp) and our next Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard (BMCM Michael P. Leavitt) will be- but under those two positions it’s been fairly unclear who’s to fill the positions of our next foray of Senior Leadership posts- especially since our next Commandant will be my current boss here at Atlantic Area. The Vice Commandant was rumored to be RADM Sally Brice-O’Hara but nothing hard on that had been released until today.
ADM Allen, the current Commandant, released an all hands email to the men and women of Continue reading…

Now that many have had time to think about the potential for real budget cuts and the decommissioning of units, assets, and cutters the real questions begin. I’ve had more than my fair-share of emails and chats today with speculation and questions on the matters of what cutters and MSST’s are going away and though I’d like to say that ADM Allen, VADM Papp and I all sat down and talked about it- I can’t, we didn’t.
ADM Allen notes in his all hands email (link above) that on the chopping block are:
5 Major Cutters;
4 HU-25 Falcon Jets;
5 HH-65 Dolphin Continue reading…

Cutter Mohawk helped in the relief
Leave it to the Washington Post/AP to break the news; USCG (and others) Reserve forces being activated in support of Haitian earthquake recovery. There have been rumblings of units/personnel potentially being activated over the last week (most from said Reservists wondering if they’ll be heading to Haiti) but alas nothing official- for large units as a whole- has come from the Coast Guard. In fact, as I write this I still haven’t seen anything official come across my 40+ Coast Guard RSS feeds on the subject of activating/recalling our Reserve forces. But according to Continue reading…

It really makes you wonder where such rumors stem from in an organization as small as ours; however, if we had a water cooler I could probably tell ya. The discussion has been ongoing for the better part of three plus weeks in the Command Center and we all have our bets on differing Flags (from new two stars to the seasoned three)… that is, if we were betting. I’ll be sleeping for the better part of the morning as I just got off work from a fairly informative (work wise) night watch. It’ll be nice to find out if Continue reading…

Short of predicting who the next Commandant of the Coast Guard will be over this past week (though I’m sure my guess is a little bias) it’s been dog slow in the CG news/information arena (at least on anything I’d care to discuss on here); however, I wasn’t really looking that hard either. Christmas is just around the corner, and I’m on a school break this month- so life in the E house is kind of nice. We’re all gearing up for the family who’ll be visiting and I’m trying not to eat all of the treats my wife keeps Continue reading…
