Recognizing the need for an award for Guardians assigned to headquarters and staff units during the recent emergent humanitarian operations in Haiti the Commandant of the Coast Guard, Admiral Thad Allen, today announced the approval of the Situational Briefing Badge, or SBB.

“People don’t realize that being a Senior Officer at a headquarters or staff unit can be just as stressful as going on patrols or Continue reading…

Coast Guard Ban on Thumb-Drives to be lifted soon?

The last time we visited the issue of not being able to use thumb-drives on DoD (or Coast Guard) computers was back in October ‘09. You’ll also recall that it was noted then that the news out of U.S. Strategic Command (StratCom) was gleaming with hope as it was stated that the use of thumb-dives will once again be a reality, just not at that time. Well that time has Continue reading…

Senior leaders under new Commandant, VADM Papp, announced: Vice Commandant, PAC, LANT, and OPS

To date we’ve learned of who our next Commandant (VADM Papp) and our next Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard (BMCM Michael P. Leavitt) will be- but under those two positions it’s been fairly unclear who’s to fill the positions of our next foray of Senior Leadership posts- especially since our next Commandant will be my current boss here at Atlantic Area. The Vice Commandant was rumored to Continue reading…

Budget cutting Cutters and Units... what's your scuttlebutt? [update]

Now that many have had time to think about the potential for real budget cuts and the decommissioning of units, assets, and cutters the real questions begin. I’ve had more than my fair-share of emails and chats today with speculation and questions on the matters of what cutters and MSST’s are going away and though I’d like to say that ADM Allen, VADM Papp and I all sat down and Continue reading…

Reserve Coast Guard units getting recalled for Haiti?

Cutter Mohawk helped in the relief

Leave it to the Washington Post/AP to break the news; USCG (and others) Reserve forces being activated in support of Haitian earthquake recovery. There have been rumblings of units/personnel potentially being activated over the last week (most from said Reservists wondering if they’ll be heading to Haiti) but alas nothing official- for large units as a whole- has come from the Coast Guard. In Continue reading…

Rumor has it the 24th Coast Guard Commandant (VADM Papp?) will be named today [updated]

It really makes you wonder where such rumors stem from in an organization as small as ours; however, if we had a water cooler I could probably tell ya. The discussion has been ongoing for the better part of three plus weeks in the Command Center and we all have our bets on differing Flags (from new two stars to the seasoned three)… that is, if we were betting. I’ll Continue reading…

Thinking of/predicting the next USCG Commandant and a bit of useless knowledge

Short of predicting who the next Commandant of the Coast Guard will be over this past week (though I’m sure my guess is a little bias) it’s been dog slow in the CG news/information arena (at least on anything I’d care to discuss on here); however, I wasn’t really looking that hard either. Christmas is just around the corner, and I’m on a school break this month- so life in Continue reading…
