Will a foreign OPSEC violation hamper our efforts for social media in the military workplace?

Hot on the heels of some great news in the social media sphere of letting DoD members (no, not the Coast Guard… yet) use social media sites on work computers comes some ammunition for those who are against it. Several websites including CNN, WSJ, and D carried the story of an Israeli (presumably Army) soldier posting the following on his Facebook page-

On Wednesday we clean up Qatanah, and on Thursday, god willing, we come home.

As this doesn’t seem so bad the media outlets have also indicated the individual cited the time and exact location the operation was to take place. Continue reading…

Boo-Hoo the Coast Guard's losing assets and funding... what would you do to fix it?

The Queen: Coast Guard Cutter Acushnet

There is no shortage of people and/or organizations out there who are calling the proposed budget cuts to the Coast Guard for FY11 outright wrong. As an Active Duty member of said service I don’t want to see funding of jobs going to the wayside; however, as an Active Duty member I am also well aware of the problems that have been discussed with regards to our aging fleet and hotspots of potentially wasted- or at the very least questionable- funding. With that being said though I end up falling into the category that Continue reading…

Coast Guard Ban on Thumb-Drives to be lifted soon?

The last time we visited the issue of not being able to use thumb-drives on DoD (or Coast Guard) computers was back in October ‘09. You’ll also recall that it was noted then that the news out of U.S. Strategic Command (StratCom) was gleaming with hope as it was stated that the use of thumb-dives will once again be a reality, just not at that time. Well that time has come and gone and it looks like StratCom has given their blessing to once again use thumb-drives via USB.

According to a piece on Danger Room (via InsideDefense.com) the ban Continue reading…

What a drag… Twitter was hacked again

What happens when your source of all things happening in the world ceases to work? Um… nothing; as you have no way to tell anyone what’s happened.

If you weren’t already aware of the news unfolding overnight on the pages of TechCrunch (and Twitters own search) Twitter was hacked and defaced by a group calling themselves the Iranian Cyber Army.

Now begs the question of security in the social networks. As TC was keeping us updated they made a point of noting-

It is suggested that if you use the same password on your Twitter account with other accounts, now would be Continue reading…

The Coast Guard’s 11 missions in this “Best Of” video compilation… or, why the USCG Rocks!

It’s that time of the year again- no not Christmas; thought that too is upon us. No I’m referring to the time of the year that people start listing the best (or worst) of the past year. Well the Coast Guard’s been nice enough to share the best, in their opinion, 11 Coast Guard videos of 2009. The press release for the video has all the details, but who needs those if you can just watch it ‘eh? So, here’s the video and beneath it is the 11 missions that were covered. Enjoy!

The rescue of a paraglider pilot who crashed Continue reading…

Review finds 9/11 Potomac exercise was a bad idea... tell us something we don't already know

I felt compelled to post something on this only for the fact that it’s hit all the major networks and it’s Coast Guard related. The story coming across the wire last night that everyone seemed to have picking up was an Associated Press pieced about the information they’d revived on the “internal” investigation (sound so official doesn’t it?) which I assumed was garnished via a FOIA request. Anyhow the headline on what I believe was the original story reads Review finds 9/11 Potomac exercise was a bad idea. Being a Coast Guard member I find it odd that a well-to-do Continue reading…

Using USB thumb drives on Coast Guard networks... isn't happening any time soon

You may recall that towards the end of last year, I believe it was November, we were all shocked to find out we could no longer use USB thumb dives on our Coast Guard workstations. If you want to take a trip down memory lane I invite you to try and find ALCOASTs 570/08 and 577/08 as they spell it out. But for a refresher-

As you all remember, last November, use of USB flash media and removable storage devices was suspended on all DoD networks at all classification levels by the order of the Commander, U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM). The Continue reading…
