Exclusive: Amidst a budget crisis USCG Sector Juneau is staying ahead in technology

Yesterday many of us watched VADM Papp speak to the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation answering their questions as they prepare to vote on 24 March 2010 on their recommendation of whether VADM Papp should be confirmed or not as out 24th Commandant (watch it here, starts at about minute 50:00). In his testimony to the Committee he spoke of the budget crunch that our service is Continue reading…

The Coast Guard needs to get back on the social media pedestal

The Coast Guard’s been slowly falling off the radar as a social media user where at one time they were the poster child of government using online social tools.

As one who does a lot of observing of military, specifically Coast Guard, social media I’ve been noticing a huge shift in the use of Facebook from all services and the use of other such mediums. By “Coast Guard” I’m referring Continue reading…

Beware of technology while living in the fishbowl

I was reading an article about all the hoopla surrounding the former CO of USS Cowpens (and others) and how it may be related to the current norm of living in an ‘everyone’s connected – always connected’ world where access to the internet is almost a given- so far as military personnel are concerned. Crew and incidnet of CG6028 get a Facebook group… got something to say?

Will a foreign OPSEC violation hamper our efforts for social media in the military workplace?

Hot on the heels of some great news in the social media sphere of letting DoD members (no, not the Coast Guard… yet) use social media sites on work computers comes some ammunition for those who are against it. Several websites including CNN, WSJ, and D carried the story of an Israeli (presumably Army) soldier posting the following on his Facebook page-

On Wednesday we clean up Qatanah, and on Thursday, Continue reading…

DoD authorizes use of social media in the workplace... but what about the Coast Guard?

This past Thursday (25 February 2010) the Department of Defense, the parent command of the other four Armed Services, finally released its highly anticipated memorandum (DTM 09-026 also available below) covering the use of social media tools/websites on/from the unclassified computer networks (NIPRNET). Effective immediately the use of social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube is authorized with nearly no restrictions but only on DoD specific computers (read: Continue reading…

Coast Guard Public Affairs is taking control; and it's a good thing

CGA PIER Site

This post will actually be somewhat delayed but only be a few days as I’m on a self induced hiatus from blogging or any real ‘online’ social media interaction due to time constraints with school and family. But since it only takes my a moment I’ll take a pause from my papers and write a post…

On 17 February (yesterday as I write this, last week for publishing) Continue reading…
