The Scope Will Always Creep
(or, creepers be creepin'...)
Every boundary you fail to hold is a decision you have already made — just not honestly.
Scope creep rarely announces itself. It arrives as a favor, a small addition, a reasonable-sounding request from someone important. And because each ask seems minor, we say yes, not from strategy, but from discomfort with the word no.
The Stoics would recognize this immediately (yet I still fall prey to the ask). Epictetus taught that the chief task of a rational person is to distinguish what is yours to decide from what is not. Scope is yours to decide. The stakeholder's preference about scope is not.
Hold the line not with aggression but with clarity. A project manager who cannot say "that is outside our agreement" is not being flexible; they are being unclear. Clarity is a form of respect. Give it early, give it calmly, and give it every time.
